Utstillingen består av 8 utvalgte
panoramafotografier fra en stor serie i Liaos omfattende prosjekt som har pågått i 4 år. Alle bildene er tatt i området langs IRT toglinjen #7, mellom Manhattan og Queens i New York.
#7 linjen i New York har lenge vært kjent som ”The international Express” på grunn av de utallige nasjonaliteter som har bidratt til å utforme hybride lokalsamfunn langs denne togruten. Nabolagene langs denne togruten regnes i dag som verdens mest sammensatte, med befolkning fra omtrent alle verdensnasjoner.
IRT #7 har vært veien ”in og ut” av Queens og har representert økonomisk og sosial utviklingsmulighet for enkeltmennesker. Med sitt utrolige mangfold har den også vært en inspirasjonskilde for kreativitet og kulturelle utvekslinger. Derfor kan IRT #7 sammenlignes med f ruktbare elvedaler som gjennom historien har vært grunnlaget for store verdenssivilisasjoner. Panoramabildene i Habitat 7 gir et detaljrikt innblikk i måten våre moderne samfunn utformes og utvikles rundt en menneskeskapt ”elvebredd”.
Liao har selv reist med IRT #/7 i mer en syv år før han tok fatt på arbeidet med Habitat 7. Kunstneren utrykker selv - ”I am still constantly awed by the complexity of the communities formed alongside it as well as the harmonious co-existence of so many people of distinct ethnic backgrounds. I’ve come to see the 7 Train as a habitat of these immigrant settlers who pursue the typical “American Dream” while upholding their ethnic traditions.”
Liao bruker ikke panoramakamera, men tar en rekke bilder fra samme lokalitet med et analogt storformatkamera. Deretter setter han fragmenter sammen med digitale skjøter. Liao mener at denne kombinasjonsteknikken skaper den rike visuelle atmosfæren han søker og det bringer både helhetsoversikt og detaljer i et og samme verk.
Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao, f 1977 i Taiwan har bodd og virket i Canada og deretter i USA siden 1999. Bilder fra Habitat 7 serien har så langt blitt stilt ut på Queens Museum of Art, NY, Norton Museum of Art, FL, George Eastman House, Rochester, NY, Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie , Arles, Frankrike.
Han har også mottatt mye medieoppmerksomhet rundt serien Habitat 7 blant annet i kunsttidsskrifter som Art in America, ART News, Art Review og fra nyhetsmedia som: The New York Times, New York Times Magazine, Village Voice, The New York Sun, The Daily News.
Utstillingen ble vist i Stiftelsen 3,14 i Bergen i 2008 på vei til visninger i de Baltiske land.

The exhibition contains 8 large, panoramic photos, selected from Liao’s comprehensive project Habitat 7 which has been going on for over 4 years. All shots are taken on locations along the #7 train route connecting Queens and Manhattan in New York.

Liao’s work is rooted in the cultural diversity that has been a binding factor in the borough of Queens, NY and more specifically, the role of the #7 train in the development of this unequaled diversity. The Flushing IRT train has long been dubbed “The International Express” due to the myriad nationalities that have formed hybrid communities along train’s route. Like the great civilizations that lined the major rivers of the world, the #7 is one of New York’s important arteries and has been an inspiration for numerous creative ideas on the levels of both economic and cultural exchange. Habitat 7 invites a reconsideration of the ways in which modern societies evolve around the manmade river basins of today.
Liao works with a large format camera that can produce an 8 x 10 negative. Many shots of a single scene over a period of time are then grafted together with digital technology. “By joining the pieces together in post-production,” Liao says, “I can best represent the atmosphere of time and give both panoramic and detailed representation of the environment.” With these cinematic photographs, Liao is “interested in observing how people uphold their ethnic traditions while pursuing the typical American dream.”
