Marianne Heier Pionér

Norges status som et av verdens rikeste land skyldes i vesentlig grad et lykketreff som
inntraff for ca 40 år siden. Oljefunnene i Nordsjøen snudde opp ned på nasjonen, og
forvandlet den på få år fra fattigfant til krøsus.
Dette er utgangspunktet for Marianne Heiers utstilling på ROM for kunst og arkitektur.
Videoen Pionér beskriver et goldt havdyp. Bildene følges av stemmen til en tidligere
nordsjødykker. Med utgangspunkt i egne erfaringer, forteller han fra de første risikable
dykkene som la grunnlaget for det norske oljeeventyret. Seks lysbokser fremstiller
utviklingen i en aksjekurs. Grafene herfra minner om dramatiske fjell, og fremstillingen
bærer referanser til nasjonalromantisk maleri. Slik trekker utstillingen en estetisk
parallell mellom to epoker av norsk nasjonsbygging og to typer retorikk. Ved å sette
oljeindustrien og dens revolusjonerende betydning for norsk økonomi opp mot den
romantiske idealiseringen av «det norske», ønsker Heier å stille spørsmål ved kulturens
rolle i konstruksjonen av den nasjonale selvforståelsen. Til tross for nasjonens status
som nyrik, synes det norske selvbildet fortsatt tuftet på tradisjoner og idealer knyttet til
nøysomhet og hardt arbeid.

I perioden 2005 – 2006 har Heier mottatt Statens arbeidsstipend for yngre og
nyetablerte kunstnere. Litt forenklet kan man si at disse pengene, i likhet med det meste
av de offentlige midlene i Norge, stammer fra Nordsjøen. Statens arbeidsstipend er ment
å fungere som lønn slik at kunstnere kan frigjøre tid fra annet lønnsarbeid og prioritere
egen kunstfaglig utvikling. Denne tiden har Heier likevel benyttet til lønnede oppdrag.
Felles for oppdragene er at de har en pedagogisk karakter, der hennes egen kunstneriske
kompetanse reproduseres. Inntektene fra denne virksomheten har hun plassert i olje- og
offshore-aksjer. Slik reinvesterer hun stipendpengene i opphavet og hovedkilden for
norsk økonomi. Som kunstner står hun i forbindelse med Nordsjøen. Hun er en del av et
norsk økonomisk landskap.

Marianne Heier har de siste årene vært en av Norges mest omtalte kunstnere, med en
omfattende utstillingsvirksomhet i inn- og utland. Hun har gjort seg bemerket med prosjekter
som Cracking Concrete (2000), Permanent Installation (5 783 Euros) (2005), En dråpe i havet, (2005), Construction Site (2006) og Manifest 2007 (2007).

Hun har hatt separatutstillinger blant annet i UKS (Oslo), Care Of (Milano), Galleria Luigi
Franco (Torino), Fabia Calvasina Arte Contemporanea (Milano).

Av kollektivutstillinger kan nevnes Artistic Strategies for an Economy in Crisis i Galleria
Civica(Trento), The Gift i Sparwasser HQ (Berlin), Post Nora i TodayArt Museum (Beijing)
og The Price of Everything ved Whitney Independent Study Program (New York).

Pionér er en selvstendig utstilling, men markerer også innledningen til en større produksjon i regi av Heier. Arbeidet er del av Per Gunnar Tverbakks stipendiatprosjekt «Rom for innblanding» under Stipendprogrammet for kunstnerisk utviklingsarbeid.

Marianne Heier Pioneer

Norway ’s status as one of the richest countries in the world is largely due to a stroke of luck that occurred some 40 years ago. The discovery of oil in the North Sea turned the nation upside down and transformed it from pauper to prince over the span of just a few years.

This is the premise for Marianne Heier’s exhibition at Galleri R-O-M. Her video entitled Pioneer depicts the barren depths of the ocean.The images are accompanied by a former North Sea diver’s voice-over narration. Talking from his own experience, he tells the story of the first hazardous dives that laid the foundation for the Norwegian oil adventure. Six light boxes present the fluctuations of a share price . These curves resemble dramatic mountains, and the visual presentation carries references to National Romantic painting. The exhibit thus draws an aesthetic parallel between two eras of Norwegian nation building and between two types of rhetoric.  By juxtaposing the oil industry with its revolutionary significance for the Norwegian economy and the romantic idealization of “quintessentially Norwegian qualities”, Heier seeks to question the role of culture in the construction of the national sense of self. Despite the nation’s nouveau riche position, the Norwegian self image still appears to be rooted in traditions and ideals tied to frugality and hard work.

For the period of 2005-2006, Heier was awarded the Norwegian Government’s work grant for younger and newly established artists. Somewhat simplified, one might say that this money – as does the majority of public funding in Norway – originates from the North Sea.  The Government artist grant is intended to serve as salary, thereby allowing the artists to free up their time from other bread-and-butter work to focus on their artistic development. Nevertheless, Heier opted to spend this time taking paid jobs. These temporary gigs all share a common didactic purpose that reproduces Heier’s own artistic expertise. Heier then placed the income generated by these activities in shares in the oil and offshore industry. In this way, she reinvests the grant money back into the origin and main source of the Norwegian economy. As an artist, she has ties to the North Sea. She is part of the Norwegian economic landscape.

With an extensive exhibition record both nationally and internationally, Marianne Heier has been one of Norway's most talked-about artists over the past few years. She has attracted attention with projects such as Cracking Concrete (2000), Permanent Installation (5.783 Euros) (2005), En dråpe i havet [A Drop in the Ocean] (2005), Construction Site (2006), and Manifest 2007 (2007). Her solo shows include such venues as UKS [Young Artists' Society] (Oslo), Care Of (Milan), Galleria Luigi Franco (Turin), and Fabia Calvasina Arte Contemporanea (Milan). Selected group exhibits include Artistic Strategies for an Economy in Crisis in Galleria Civica (Trento), The Gift in Sparwasser HQ (Berlin), Post Nora in TodayArtMuseum (Beijing), and The Price of Everything at the Whitney Independent Study Program (New York). 

Pioneer is an independent exhibition, but also serves as the introduction to a larger production organized by Heier. These activities are part of Per Gunnar Tverbakk’s fellowship project called Space for Interference funded by the National Programme for Research Fellowships in the Arts.
